THE 1970 to 1991 FILES

In this section you'll find the reviews of my bootleg CD's from the period 1977 to 1991. Basically everything up till the Bat Out of Hell 2 album got released. All the albums got separate ratings. First there is the audio rating. Based on the sound quality of the source. Are there much distractions, glitches, hiss etc. Clear sound is also an important point in this grading. Then there is the 'entertainment value' of a concert. Here I combine Meat's voice with the songs in the set list and the performance of the songs and interaction with the crowd. The average of both is the 'total' score out of a 5 star grading.

11-14-1977  Meat Loaf Live at the Agora Ballroom                     (LP Promo)

Soundboard from the vinyl bootleg. Meat Loaf at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. And what a great bootleg it is. Meat sounds really fantastic here and with a set list that contains an early version of More than You Deserve, it's hard to go wrong. Sound is good but could have been better. It kind of fluctuates. The show itself is very entertaining.

Almost gave this the maximum 5 stars but the sound is a little distracting, so 4 out of 5 stars.

11-28-1977  Meat Loaf Early at the Bottom Line                     (Radio Promo)

On November 28th, 1977 Meat Loaf played 2 shows at the Bottom Line Club in New York. This is the first show better known as the Early Show. The sound is great as it's soundboard material. Meat is also great and the songs are a joy to listen to.  These early bootlegs are a real treat for any Meat Loaf fan!

I don't give out 1/2 stars and because the Late show is better I can't give this 5 stars so I have to give 4 out of 5.

11-28-1977  Meat Loaf Late at the Bottom Line                      (Radio Promo)

This is the second show or 'Late Show' Meat Loaf performed at the Bottom Line Club on November 28th, 1977. What a great show this is! Compared to this the 'Early Show' sounds like a warming up rehearsal. Superb set list and lots of interaction with the crowd. Soundboard material again so great audio quality. Meat is great and entertaining. WOW!

This is one of my favorite bootlegs. So it's obvious that this gets the maximum score of 5 stars from me!

11-29-1977  Meat Loaf at My Father's Place                                (LP Promo)

The great shows of the 70's are continued with this great soundboard bootleg. Recorded at 'My Father's Place' in Old Roslyn, New York on November 29th, 1977. So one day after the Bottom Line concerts. This bootleg only has 5 songs. Overall they are very good. Actually one of the first bootlegs I ever got. The good sound quality makes this a rock solid album.

Just the 5 songs aren't enough for me to give this the maximum score. As I said it's a solid album so 4 out of 5 stars.

12-16-1977  Meat Loaf Live at the Bottom Line                      (Radio Promo)

This sounds very much like a compilation of both Bottom Line Concerts from November 1977. It's a radio broadcast so sound is great. Unfortunately it has the radio DJ talking between the songs. Very decent stuff and another great bootleg from the late 1970's. Meat sounds good and the set list is entertaining.

It's too much a radio broadcast with all the jabbing in between. And it's not as good as the Late Show. So 4 out of 5 stars for this one.

12-23-1977  Meat Loaf Live at Old Waldorf                            (Soundboard)

In December of 1977, Meat Loaf played two nights in a row at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. This is from the second night. It's a soundboard recording recaptured from an old music tape. Unfortunately the tape had some minor problems. The show is decent. Still 'For Crying Out Loud' is always a treat.

There is a consistent hiss during the audio and some minor parts suffer from the old audio tape. Still a great show! 4 out of 5 stars for this one.

1978  Bat Out of Hell - Bare Bones Edition                     (SACD Source)

What I understand this is the 5.1 SACD version of the original Bat Out of Hell album. Only they filtered out all the channels except the center speaker channel, leaving us with Meat's vocals only. Although I love the music arrangement of the official album it's more than entertaining to just hear Meat Loaf sing this without hearing the instruments.

Fantastic audio and a real treat to hear the songs this way. Not a concert but I give it the maximum 5 stars anyway.

01-18-1978  Meat Loaf Live at El Mocambo                            (Radio Promo)

I know, I start losing my credibility by saying that this is another winner. But it is. Meat Loaf Live at the El Mocambo in Toronto, Canada is just another fantastic bootleg. Soundboard material so great audio. Meat Loaf sounds good and some of the songs are greatly performed. This is bootlegged from the vinyl album. Recorded live on January 18th, 1978.

Although this is a great concert I do miss that little extra to give it the maximum score. Therefore a very deserved 4 out of 5 stars.

01-18-1978  Meat Loaf Live at El Mocambo                                (LP Promo)

It's the same January 18, 1978 recording as above. Only this is a direct rip from the rare Canadian Epic 7-track promotional-only Epic white title label demonstration vinyl LP album. Quality of this one is better. But 'For Crying Out Loud' is missing on this version. Also this one has the Bolero intro and Bat Out of Hell as one track.

The audio quality is better as the above but not in a way that would give this a higher overall rating. Another 4 out of 5 stars.

04-21-1978  Meat Loaf Live at the Music Hall, Cleveland     (Radio Promo)

Apparently this is a mixture of soundboard and radio promo material. Whatever the sources may be this is a great sounding bootleg. Recorded live from the Music Hall in Cleveland, Ohio on April 21st, 1978. Meat's voice is great which makes this again a very solid bootleg. There are two versions. This is the short version

It's a very decent bootleg with great quality material. Certainly good enough to get 4 out of 5 stars.

01 Bolero

04-21-1978  Meat Loaf Live at the Music Hall, Cleveland     (Radio Promo)

This is the other version. Same concert but this is the longer bootleg with two extra songs. This one comes with 'Hammerdown' and 'For Crying Out Loud' on the set list. There is also a bit more chatter to the audience. Unfortunately the sound has more distortions during the songs and the quality is significant less.

Sound quality is certainly less good but this one has Hammerdown and For Crying Out Loud. So this also gets 4 out of 5 stars.

04-21-1978  King Biscuit Flower Hour presents Meat Loaf   (Radio Promo)

From the same concert as the one above. Cleveland 1978. But this is from the original promotion CD for the King Biscuit Radio Show. And the sound is absolutely amazing! Much better sound as the Cleveland bootleg. Only letdown is that each track contains 2 or 3 songs and the show has included radio advertisements.

Amazing bootleg and fantastic audio. Because this has adverts between the songs it doesn't get the maximum. Still 4 out of 5 stars.

11-06-1978  Meat Loaf Live in Russelsheim                            (Radio Promo)

Live in Russelsheim is the radio broadcast of the 'Original Tour' concert. Very good sound quality although some hiss can be heard. This concert was also available as a bootleg DVD before it got an official release. It's not the complete concert but nonetheless a good compilation of it. Meat sounds ok and the songs are fine.

This is nothing 'special' especially after the release of the Bat Original Tour. That's why this one get 'only' 3 out of 5 stars.

11-06-1978  Meat Loaf: Bat Out of Hell - The Original Tour  (DVD Audio)

Bat Out of Hell the Original Tour was recorded at the Stadhalle in Offenbach, Germany. This is an audio rip of the official DVD. Good sound but I expected better from an official release. Still a very nice concert from the Bat out of Hell tour. As a bonus there are two tracks with an interview with Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf.

Nice complete Bats concert but the sound quality is a little disappointing. That's why I give this 4 out of 5 stars.

07-06-1978  Meat Loaf Live at the Hammersmith, Odeon     (Soundboard)

There are two versions of this bootleg. The short and the long version. The long version has the spoken intro to 'You took the Words', the 'Death of an American Guitar' speech before 'All Revved Up' starts and a 21 minute version of 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light'. This is the long version and the sound is superb! So is Meat and the entire concert. Great bootleg!

This is another of those bootlegs I can enjoy over and over. So it just has to get the maximum. 5 out of 5 stars.

09-01-1978  Meat Loaf Live at Nassau Coliseum                     (Soundboard)

This may well be the best known bootleg of Meat Loaf from the 70's. Yet 'Live at Nassau Coliseum' is not the best bootleg out there. Recorded on September 1st, 1978. With special guest Todd Rundgeren singing Just One Victory and with Steinman singing More than You Deserve. It's soundboard material but Meat's microphone seems very low mixed.

With all the other great bootlegs of this tour this one just doesn't 'do it' for me. 3 out of 5 stars.

02-16-1979  Indo Chinese Boat Benefit                                  (Radio Promo)

The Chinese Boat Benefit lasted two days in an effort to raise awareness of the boat people's plight and to help raise funds to help in the resettlement efforts. On the first night Meat showed up at the New York Palladium and played two songs. This was on February 16th, 1979. Sound is above par as it's part of a radio Broadcast. Something for the collection.

Hard to give this a grading. There are just two songs which are okay. So I decided to give a star for each song. 2 out of 5 stars.

12-19-1981  Meat Loaf Live at Rock Pop Dortmund                   (TV Audio)

If I'm being honest I have to say I hate this concert. Meat Loaf sounds stoned, drunk and uninterested. This is a terrible bootleg that I never care to listen again. Anyway the Rock Pop concert was aired on TV and this bootleg is a direct audio rip from that broadcast. Sound is very reasonable although not great. Very disappointing stuff.

This doesn't deserve much of a rating. Meat Loaf is terrible here. 1 out of 5 stars.

This was officially released on video as 'Meat Loaf Live'. Meat doesn't sound really good here but it's way better than Rock Pop. Some great songs in this set but vocally not performed too well. The audio is ripped from the released VHS tape so the sound quality is great. The concert is just okay. I hope for a better bootleg of the Dead Ringer Tour.

Obviously much better than Dortmund but still not that great. I wanted to give it a 2.5 grading.  2.5 means 3 out of 5 stars.

Meat Loaf in Italy on September 1st, 1982. For an audience recording this has good sound. A few glitches here and there but overall this is a good bootleg. The set list is also very entertaining and Meat Loaf sounds very good. The crowd seems really into it as well. I must say that I'm very pleased with this concert.

This is more than a decent audience recording. Sound is good and so is the concert. A very strong 4 out of 5 stars.

From a radio broadcast this is a compilation of the Midnight of the Lost and Found concert that Meat Loaf gave at Wembley Arena, London on September 24th 1983. Unfortunately some songs were cut for the broadcast but the sound here is really superb. Meat Loaf is also very good again. All in all this is a very enjoyable bootleg.

Great sound as this is from a radio broadcast. And concert, despite being cut, is also very good. So it gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Apparently this is an audience recording. One of the best audience tapings I've ever heard. It really sounds more like a soundboard recording. The sound is that good!. The same set list as the Milan concert. And this is also a great concert with a superb vocal performance of Meat Loaf. This is the best bootleg I have of this tour.

With sound quality that equals pro shot audio. And with Meat Loaf in great form, this is a great bootleg. A very big 4 out of 5 stars.

Another audience taping that is so good you could confuse it with a pro shot bootleg. From December 3rd, 1984 this is the first Bad Attitude bootleg I have. And this is really just fantastic. The sound quality is exceptionally good and Meat Loaf's vocals are stunning. A great complete set list with a few very interesting tracks.

This is another great concert from the Bad Attitude World Tour. This time from Offenbach, Germany from December 13th, 1984. It's the same set as the Hammersmith bootleg and the sound is also very good. Especially for an audience recording. Meat is again fabulous and gives a great concert performance.

It's a fantastic show at the Apollo in Glasgow from December 19th, 1984. The sound is okay. Everything is clear enough but there are some glitches or gaps during several songs. I guess they are from tape changes. Also a bit of audience talk and sound during this concert. Set list is the same as the rest of this tour.

The sound quality of this is good. But too many gaps and audience sound make me give this 3 out of 5 stars.

This audience recording from the Edinburgh Playhouse has very good sound for a recording of it's time. This concert from January 20th, 1985 has some slight missing gaps in some songs and there are a few moments of audience talk but overall very good. It's another fun show from this tour with the same songs as in the other set lists.

Audio is slightly better than Glasgow above and almost as good as Offenbach. This entertaining show gets 4 out of 5 stars.

According to some websites this concert is actually the 'Bad Attitude Live!' concert that was released on video. The bootleg says Bottom Line, February 6th, 1985. Whatever it may be this is another truly great bootleg. Sound quality is superb and Meat is again stunning. Too bad the concert is incomplete. Still 8 great tracks to enjoy!

Sound is fantastic and so is Meat Loaf. This is a great concert that deserves a DVD release. Must have concert.

It's a great sounding bootleg. And Meat Loaf is again in great shape. This one gets 5 out of 5 stars.

It's a pro shot concert that was aired on the radio. Still there are a lot of sound noises that are a little disturbing. So not the best sounding bootleg. Meat sounds good but not as fantastic as on the other bootlegs of this tour. Might have to do with the fact that he suffered from a broken leg during this show.

Disappointing sound on this bootleg. Meat sounds okay but nothing more than that. 3 out of 5 stars.

02-24-1987  Meat Loaf at Newcastle City Hall                             (Audience)

This is from the '20/20 World Tour' or 'Blind Before I stop Tour'. Sound quality is fine. Not great but fine. Meat Loaf sounds a bit low but it's an acceptable audience recording. Concert itself is simply great. Meat has a great voice and the set list of this tour is entertaining. Not the best CD of this tour but also nothing wrong with it.

Sound quality of the concert isn't that good.  But the performance certainly is. 3 out of 5 stars.

02-26-1987  Meat Loaf Live in Sheffield                                          (Audience)

The sound quality of this audience recording is slightly better than the Newcastle concert. The show is more entertaining too. Taped on February 26th, 1987. Meat Loaf is amazing as he was most shows during this tour. This bootleg has great interaction with the crowd combined with some great performances.

Sound is decent although their are a few distortions from the original tape. Concert is fantastic. 4 out of 5 stars.

03-01-1987  The Alternate London Radio Concert           (Radio Broadcast)

Great sound quality on this soundboard bootleg. These are alternate versions from the official released 'Meat Loaf Live' CD and were aired on British radio. Too bad it's only 4 songs. Meat Loaf sounds fabulous again and the songs are a joy to listen too. From the Wembley Arena Concert of March 1st, 1987.

Fantastic sound and performances. It's just way too short with just 4 songs. That's why it gets 3 out of 5 stars.

  9/10            7/10

01 Blind Before I Stop
02 Midnight at the Lost and Found
03 Took the Words
04 Bat Out of Hell

03-26-1987  Live at the Odeon, Birmingham                                (Audience)

Perhaps the sound is slightly better than the Sheffield bootleg. And this is absolutely a great performance from Meat Loaf. Yet I like Sheffield better as that is my favorite bootleg of this tour. That said, this Birmingham concert from March 26th, 1987 still is a very entertaining show and a great addition to my collection.

Very decent sound quality. Still not great. Meat Loaf is amazing again. All in all this deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

1987  The London Meltdown Concert                               (Video Audio)

A rip from the TV concert that Meat Loaf gave in London as part of the Meltdown Concert series. I haven't been able to track down the exact date of the show. Sound quality is very good. It's pro shot and so the sound is soundboard material. But it was aired on TV in 1987 and the source is mono. So it could have been better.

The sound of this bootleg is very good. Meat Loaf is also very good. But it's not perfect. So 4 out of 5 stars.

1987  Meat Loaf Live in Düsseldorf                                        (Audience)

Absolutely a great concert. Great performances on all the songs and Meat sounds energetic and strong. This time from Düsseldorf, Germany. Date is unknown to me but guessing it was round July 1987. The sound quality of this concert is a bit of a letdown. Decent for an audience recording of that time but I hoped for better.

Great concert but the audio is a bit of a letdown. It's acceptable for an audience recording but brings down the grade. 3 out of 5 stars.

07-19-1987  Out in the Green Festival, Schaafheim                     (Audience)

This is the worst sounded bootleg I have of this tour. The 'Out in the Green Festival' was held in Schaafheim, Germany on July 19th 1987. An Meat performed a good part of his World Tour set list during the show. But as I said the sound is spoiling the fun here. Some bass distortions and low level audio.

Not a concert I will listen back a lot. Don't like the audio at all on this one. Barely 3 out of 5 stars.

02-19-1988   Meat Loaf Live at the Chance                                 (Audience)

Sometimes an audience recording is so bad you don't even bother to listen to it. This is one of those tapings. From Meat Loaf's performance at the Chance in 1988. The audio here is really bad. As if you're outside listening through a wall. I must admit that I never completely finished this one. Sometimes it was almost impossible to even understand the words. 2nd show of the Tour.

Terrible audio and therefore sometimes impossible to really hear things. This gets 2 out of 5 stars.

03-14-1988  Meat Loaf Live in Edinburgh                                (Audience)

If Out of the Frying Pan didn't fade in at the start this would have been perfect. This is my favorite bootleg of the Lost Boys and Golden Girls tour. From March 14th, 1988 this is Meat loaf at his best. Audio quality is very good for an audience taping. Best of this tour and so is the show. An absolute joy to listen to.

Great audio with some crowd talk between songs. Great audio and a perfect concert means this gets the maximum of 5 out of 5 stars.

03-20-1988  Meat Loaf Live in Birmingham                                (Audience)

It's the complete Lost Boys concert at Birmingham. Taped from the audience on March 20th, 1988. Many fans get excited when it comes to this bootleg and rightfully so. The sound quality is very decent. Some glitches here and there but the concert makes up for it. Really an amazing concert. This is a must have if you're a Meat Loaf fan.

The sound almost spoils the perfect grade here. Sound is ok though. But it's the show itself that earns this 5 out of 5 stars.

03-29-1988  Meat Loaf Live at the Hammersmith in London    (Audience)

Another complete Lost Boys concert. This time recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on March 29th, 1988. The sound is just okay. It sounds a bit 'thin' and there is a constant hiss around. The concert itself is quite good and enjoyable. Same set list as the other shows from this tour. Decent CD

If the audio was better this would surely have scored more stars. But the sound has a hiss and is thin. 3 out of 5 stars.

04-15-1988  Meat Loaf Live in Vienna                                            (Audience)

This bootleg of Live in Vienna was actually an audience video recording. You can find the DVD in the DVD bootleg section. The sound is pretty good for an audience tape. The concert is unfortunately incomplete but sound is better than Birmingham. Meat Loaf is again on fire. Great interaction parts with the crowd and great performances.

This has good audio and Meat Loaf is in form. Lost Boys track is incomplete and so is the concert. Therefore 4 out of 5 stars.

06-26-1988  Meat Loaf Live at Flushing Meadows                      (Audience)

On June 26th, 1988 Meat Loaf played at the Queens Day Festival at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York. This is the complete 70 minute concert from that evening. The sound quality isn't really great. It has not too many crowd noise but a constant buzz and hiss through the tracks and the sound is also quite low. Meat Loaf is great though.

The audio quality is rather poor. It's the entire concert. But even this being complete can't really save it from a maximum of 3 out of 5 stars.

  4/10            7/10

01 Out of the Frying Pan
02 Masculine

12-16-1988  Meat Loaf Live in Oshawa, Canada                            (Audience)

Recorded in Oshawa, Ontario on December 16th, 1988. Meat Loaf had a decent show here. The show isn't near as good as Vienna or Birmingham and the audio is of this bootleg is just okay. The sound is just too unbalanced for a proper rating but I also want to make clear that it's not unbearable to listen to.

This is an average bootleg. Not the best sound, not the best performance so an average rating of 3 out of 5 stars.

02-??-1989  Meat Loaf Live at Katina's Nightclub                        (Audience)

This bootleg from Katina's Night Club in Hadley, Massachusetts is a great audience recording. The sound is good. No glitches and sound is pretty clear. The concert is also great. This Rock Medley has a few surprises. Meat sounds very good and has lots of energy. My version misses the incomplete 'Bat out of hell' track. All Revved Up is also incomplete.

A very entertaining bootleg. Audio is good, especially for an audience taping. Meat Loaf is terrific. 4 out of 5 stars.

Meat Loaf's 1989-1991 Tour has left some great bootlegs. This is another one. Live from the Bayou in Georgetown, Washington D.C. on March 21st. The sound is decent although track one has some volume issues. The other tracks are good for an audience taping. Great set list with another great Rock Medley.

Good sound, entertaining show. This has everything a fan wants. Same as Katina but ths one is complete. 4 out of 5 stars.

05-07-1989  Meat Loaf Live at the Bergen Community               (Audience)

Complete different sound as Katina and Washington but equally good. This was recorded at the gym of the Bergen Community College on May 7th 1989. According to the taper the gym had bad acoustics. Still the sound is loud and clear and Meat Loaf is in great energy and shape during the performance.

Another great bootleg from this period. Another strong Meat Loaf performance with good sound quality. 4 out of 5 stars.

05-13-1989  Meat Loaf Live in Slagharen, the Netherlands          (Audience)

This is one of my favorite bootlegs. Part because I'm being Dutch and this was recorded in the Netherlands on May 13, 1989. But also because it's just a fantastic show. Crowd is into it and so is Meat Loaf. To support the great show this has also great audio. Bit high on the treble perhaps but sound is very clear.

Great audio for an audience recording and a great show. Just another great addition from this tour. 4 out of 5 stars.

05-13-1989  Meat Loaf Live in Slagharen, the Netherlands     (Soundboard)

I have mixed feelings about this bootleg. Same concert as the one above. It's ripped from the incomplete pro shot DVD registration of this concert (reviewed in the DVD Bootleg section) and the sound is soundboard material. But it's very unbalanced and Masculine just sounds bad. The parts where the audio sounds good it really sounds terrific.

Soundboard audio is too unbalanced for a real high rating. Concert is  incomplete. I prefer the audience bootleg. 4 out of 5 stars.

09-??-1989  Meat Loaf Live in Toronto, Canada                          (Audience)

This is an audience taping from September 1989. This is an incomplete bootleg as it's missing Paradise by the Dashboard Light (which apparently had a few glitches). Decent audio although not as good as the above boots of this tour. All Revved up starts with a bit of Do Wah Diddy Diddy which is entertaining to hear.

An okay bootleg. Nothing too special. Meat is entertaining at parts and the audio is good enough but not fantastic. 3 out of 5 stars.

09-04-1989  Meat Loaf Live in Victoria, Canada                          (Audience)

The audio on this bootleg is not bad at all. It's mono and the volume is quite low, especially on the vocals. But if you boost your volume it's pretty clear to listen to. Decent sound quality gets backed up with a decent show. The concert itself is not half bad. Meat really had fun during this pre-Bat 2 tour. Recorded at the Forge, Victoria on September 4th, 1989.

Reasonable sound within a reasonable to nice show. It's all just above average. 3 out of 5 stars.

10-01-1989  Meat Loaf Live in St Petersburg, Florida                  (Audience)

There is a constant hiss and the sound is quite low on this bootleg. But this still is a great concert. This concert from October 1, 1989 is a rare treasure. It's not complete but the 9 tracks we get are all very entertaining. Meat talks about his birthday, 4 days earlier and performs some great songs. As with all the concerts from this time, Meat Loaf clearly is having fun.

Unfortunately the low volume with a consistent hiss prevents this from being really great. The show is good. This gets 3 out of 5 stars.

The audio on this concert is okay but far from good. Lots of distortions here and there but clear enough to listen to. Meat Loaf is good again but this bootleg doesn't come close to the 89 bootlegs. This concert is missing All Revved Up. I understand it was incomplete to start with. Paradise has partial very bad audio.

This one barely got a 6 on audio. Too much distortion all over the place. Concert is okay but nothing special. 3 out of 5 stars.

Great Soundboard concert. The audio quality is really superb. The concert is entertaining and Meat Loaf is sounding great. Nice interaction with the crowd. All Revved Up is incomplete and fades out. Also missing the start of track 01 Frying Pan. Recorded at the Wisconsin University on October 12, 1990.

Great sound and entertaining enough concert. Two songs are incomplete though which is a real shame. 4 out of 5 stars.

This has an amazing audience recording. Really great to listen to. Date of this concert is unknown to me but it's clear that this 'promotion' tour for Bat Out of Hell 2 delivers. Seven great tracks which are similar to the 1989 and 1990 bootlegs. Meat Loaf also has a great voice here which leads to some great song performances.

Great audio. Way above the average audience recordings. Meat's performance is also great. 4 out of 5 stars.

The DVD is one of my favorite bootlegs and this audio show is one of the better CD bootlegs. 2 hours of non stop entertainment.

There isn't much to say about this bootleg from August 31st, 1991. It's an audience recording of the concert at Bad Gandersheim in Germany. The sound is very decent although it has some crowd noise. This is an incomplete CD. I only have three tracks which are entertaining enough. But at least Paradise and the Rock n Roll Medley are missing.

How to rate a three song bootleg. I can't really give a rating for the concert but based on the audio of the three tracks still 3 out of 5 stars.
